# ORCID data for agents

STATUS: in development, not yet hosted. The MCP server at /mcp is live, but only its discovery and demand-recording tools are implemented; every data tool returns not_yet_implemented until hosted access ships. Nothing here fabricates data. Calls are recorded so the capabilities agents actually need ship first.

Streamable HTTP, no authentication. Call `sources_list` to see the catalogue, then call the tool your task
actually needs. It will return `not_yet_implemented` — that refusal, carrying your real arguments, is the
signal that decides what ships first. If the refusal blocked your task, call `register_interest`.

Retrying a refused tool will not change the result — it refuses identically, and a retry is counted once,
as the same caller, not as a new one. If the refusal blocked your task, call `register_interest`.

Today this returns `not_yet_implemented` and records your arguments. Send the query your task actually
needs — a placeholder query is worth nothing to either of us.

## Routing guidance

What an agent reads to decide whether `orcid` is the right source, and what to reach for when it is not.

**Answers.** Which person wrote a paper, unambiguously. Solves the name-collision problem that breaks every author-level analysis built on names alone.

**Query shape.** An ORCID iD, or a name plus affiliation.

**Cost.** Free.

**Legal basis.** Public API — the platform’s own documented, openly available interface.

**Latency.** Fast.

**Prefer instead.** `openalex` for author-level metrics, which ORCID does not compute.

**Cannot answer.** Anything about researchers without a record, and records are self-maintained and often sparse.

**Caveat.** Self-asserted. An empty record means nobody filled it in, not that nothing was published.
