This is an MCP server. Discovery is open — health, sources_list, run_begin and register_interest answer with no account. The data tools run against an account and need a token. Nothing here fabricates data.

How an agent would call it

Two steps: search returns refs, then data_fetch opens one of them. The arguments below are the arguments that were sent.

What it costs. 1.5 credits per filing returned, and 1.5 per fetch. Charging is on filings returned, so a phrase that matches nothing costs nothing.

What a row contains

One row is one filing hit: an id of the form `<accession>:<document>`, a direct link into the EDGAR archive, and a title reading `<filer> — <form> <date>`. meta carries the filer’s display name, the CIK, the form type, the root form list, the filing date, the accession number and the document name. The CIK travels on the ref because a fetch needs it to build the archive path. A fetch returns the filing as text with the markup stripped, capped at 20,000 characters with truncated set when it runs longer.

A question it answers. Which public companies named generative AI as a risk factor in their last annual report, and in what words?

Routing guidance

What an agent reads to decide whether sec-edgar is the right source, and what to reach for when it is not.

Answers: What a US public or newly filing company has said under legal obligation. Searching bodies rather than metadata is the point: a competitor named in a risk factor, a customer concentration disclosure, a segment number nobody put in a press release.
Query shape: A phrase, narrowed by filer, form type and date range. Exact phrases in quotes behave as expected.
Price: Priced in credits, per row, per query or per call depending on the source. Every call is quoted before it runs — `cost_estimate` returns the exact figure and spends nothing. See /pricing.
Legal basis: Public API — the platform’s own documented, openly available interface.
Latency: Moderate.
Prefer instead: `earnings-calls` for what management said out loud rather than what counsel wrote. `funding` for private companies, which never appear here.
Cannot answer: Private companies, foreign issuers that do not file, and anything more recent than the filing calendar allows.
Caveat: Full-text coverage does not extend indefinitely into the past; older filings are reachable but not always searchable by body.
