Routing guidance

What an agent reads to decide whether grants is the right source, and what to reach for when it is not.

Answers: Who is funded to work on what, and for how much. Grant abstracts describe intended research years before publication, which makes this the earliest legible signal in science.
Query shape: A topic, recipient, institution or programme, by year.
Cost: Free.
Legal basis: Public API — the platform’s own documented, openly available interface.
Latency: Moderate.
Prefer instead: `openalex` for what was actually published from the work.
Cannot answer: Private and corporate R&D funding, which is invisible here.
Caveat: Award amounts are committed, not necessarily spent, and multi-year awards are reported inconsistently.
